Vipin Kumar, a seasoned IAS officer from the 1996 Bihar cadre, officially assumed his new role as Chairman of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) today. Known for his impressive leadership in both state and national roles, Kumar is set to bring fresh expertise to AAI’s ongoing mission of strengthening India’s civil aviation landscape.
A Proven Track Record in Education and Infrastructure
Prior to this role, Kumar served as the Additional Secretary in the Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education, where he led impactful initiatives like the Samagra Shiksha Scheme, the National Education Policy-2020, and the PM-SHRI Scheme. His previous assignments in Bihar showcase his dedication to both infrastructure and social development, with key positions such as:
- District Magistrate in multiple districts
- Chairman of Bihar Bridge Construction Corporation
- Managing Director of Bihar Milk Cooperative Federation (SUDHA)
- Director of the Mid-Day Meal Scheme in Bihar

With a foundation in Electronics & Communication Engineering, Kumar combines technical knowledge with robust administrative capabilities. His appointment as AAI Chairman is expected to advance key organizational goals, including the development of world-class airport infrastructure, enhanced air navigation services, and improved passenger experiences nationwide. About the Airports Authority of India
Founded on April 1, 1995, through an Act of Parliament, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) was formed by merging the National Airports Authority and the International Airports Authority of India. Tasked with the development, management, and modernization of India’s civil aviation infrastructure, AAI plays a crucial role in overseeing both ground operations and airspace management. Currently, AAI operates 133 airports, including 28 civil enclaves and 8 privately managed airports. Among the 110 operational airports, 35 are designated as international facilities, facilitating India’s connections worldwide.
