Indian hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh and legendary goalkeeper PR Sreejesh received top honors at the prestigious FIH Hockey Star Awards 2024, held in Muscat, Oman. Harmanpreet was named Player of the Year, while PR Sreejesh was awarded Goalkeeper of the Year, celebrating their outstanding performances in international hockey.
Harmanpreet Singh: FIH Player of the Year 2024
Harmanpreet Singh, known as one of the finest drag-flickers in modern hockey, played a crucial role in India’s success at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Leading the Indian men’s hockey team, he scored an impressive 10 goals, emerging as the tournament’s top scorer and propelling India to a historic bronze medal.
The Indian captain also led his team to victory in the Asian Champions Trophy in September, where he was named Player of the Tournament. This latest accolade marks Harmanpreet’s third FIH Player of the Year award, having previously won in 2021 and 2022. He received a remarkable 63.84% of the total votes, with significant support from fans, the media, the expert panel, and national hockey associations. PR Sreejesh: FIH Goalkeeper of the Year 2024
PR Sreejesh, affectionately known as the “Great Wall of India,” capped off his illustrious career by winning the Goalkeeper of the Year award for the third time. Sreejesh’s retirement following the Paris 2024 Olympics was marked with well-deserved accolades, and he received 62.22% of the votes.
Sreejesh’s heroics were pivotal during India’s thrilling quarter-final victory over Great Britain at the Paris Olympics, where he defended brilliantly despite India being down to 10 men in the first half. Reflecting on the award, Sreejesh said, “It has been a dream year for me. I could not have asked for a better parting gift than the accolades I have received post-Olympics. And this one is incredibly special as it comes from votes across genres.”
