In a groundbreaking move for Indian biotechnology and veterinary science, Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister, launched India’s premier Animal Stem Cell BioBank and Laboratory at the National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB) in Hyderabad. This initiative is poised to transform animal health, regenerative medicine, and agricultural efficiency in line with India’s increasing emphasis on biotechnology-driven solutions.

World-Class Facility for Animal Biotechnology

The Animal Stem Cell BioBank, spanning 9,300 sq ft and constructed at a cost of ₹1.85 crore, is tailored towards regenerative medicine and cellular therapies for livestock. It boasts cutting-edge infrastructure including:

  • Stem cell culture unit
  • 3D bioprinter for tissue engineering
  • Bacterial culture lab and cryostorage facilities
  • Autoclave rooms with high biosafety standards
  • Advanced air handling systems and uninterrupted power supply

This advanced laboratory will facilitate disease modeling, reproductive biotechnology, and tissue regeneration, with expansion plans under the National Biopharma Mission (NBM) of DBT–BIRAC for biobanking animal stem cells and their derivatives.

New Hostel and Quarters for Researchers

Simultaneously with the BioBank inauguration, Dr. Singh initiated the construction of a new hostel block and Type-IV residential quarters at NIAB. Sanctioned by the Department of Biotechnology at a total cost of ₹19.98 crore, these accommodations will cater to the requirements of research scholars, faculty, and staff, nurturing a vibrant academic and innovation environment.

Launch of Five Breakthrough Veterinary Technologies

To enhance India’s veterinary diagnostics and combat antimicrobial resistance, the Minister introduced five innovative technologies:

  1. Rapid Detection of Brucellosis – Field-deployable DIVA-capable diagnostic kit for early detection of Brucella species.
  2. Mastitis Detection Technology – Affordable on-site test for subclinical and clinical mastitis in dairy cattle.
  3. Antimicrobial Sensitivity Testing Device – Portable tool providing results within two hours for judicious antibiotic use.
  4. Toxoplasmosis Detection Kit – Sensitive and specific test for Toxoplasma gondii infection in animals.
  5. Japanese Encephalitis Detection Kit – Locally developed rapid strip for extensive surveillance in animals and humans.

These advancements adhere to the ‘One Health’ approach, ensuring the holistic management of human, animal, and environmental health collectively.
