Cairn Oil & Gas Joins Global Methane Reduction Efforts with OGMP 2.0 Membership
Cairn Oil & Gas, part of Vedanta Group, has made history by becoming India’s first oil and gas company to join the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Oil & Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP) 2.0. This flagship methane reduction initiative emphasizes accurate measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) of methane emissions to drive significant reductions. Cairn signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with OGMP 2.0, signaling its commitment to sustainable practices in methane emissions reporting and reduction.
What is OGMP 2.0 and Why It Matters for Methane Emission Control?
OGMP 2.0 provides a comprehensive framework for emissions management, focusing on best practices and robust reporting. Covering over 40% of global oil and gas production, the initiative empowers companies to improve emissions data quality and transparency. Through OGMP 2.0’s science-backed methodologies, companies can establish and verify progress toward methane reduction targets, supporting the Global Methane Pledge and Paris Agreement goals to reduce global methane emissions by 30% by 2030.
Cairn’s 5-Year Methane Reduction Target Under OGMP 2.0
As part of its OGMP 2.0 membership, Cairn has committed to setting a five-year methane reduction target, with plans to report progress transparently to the partnership. This commitment will allow Cairn to analyze its emissions profile more effectively and utilize data-driven strategies for cost-effective mitigation. The company has reaffirmed its goal to achieve Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2030.
Welcoming Cairn to OGMP 2.0: A Call to Industry Transformation
Giulia Ferrini, OGMP 2.0 Programme Manager, welcomed Cairn’s participation, expressing hope that this commitment will inspire other Indian companies to join OGMP 2.0 and enhance methane emissions management within the oil and gas sector. With OGMP 2.0 membership, Cairn aims to contribute to broader industry changes, championing responsible and sustainable energy practices in India.
Cairn’s Broader ESG Strategy: Commitment to Environmental Stewardship
Cairn’s commitment to OGMP 2.0 aligns with its extensive ESG strategy. Hitesh Vaid, Chief Financial Officer of Cairn Oil & Gas, Vedanta Ltd., highlighted the company’s focus on renewable energy integration, carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS), and waste-to-energy projects. Additionally, Cairn’s investment in low-carbon technologies and nature-based carbon solutions showcases its dedication to environmental sustainability and India’s energy security.
“With OGMP 2.0 membership, we aim not only to reduce methane emissions and reach Net Zero by 2030 but also to drive a transformative change in the industry toward responsible and sustainable energy practices,” Vaid said.
Cairn’s Accelerated Net Zero Commitments and Industry Impact
Earlier this year, Cairn fast-tracked its net zero goals, now aiming to reach Net Zero Carbon by 2030. Through its OGMP 2.0 partnership, Cairn is positioned to lead methane reduction efforts in India’s oil and gas sector, contributing to global methane control objectives.
