The Indian Navy successfully conducted the third edition of its high-level virtual interaction, ‘MAHASAGAR,’ on Tuesday. This significant event was chaired by Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, the Chief of Naval Staff, who engaged in discussions with Heads of Navies, Maritime Agencies, and senior officials from Indian Ocean Region (IOR) countries, including Bangladesh, Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania. According to a press release by the Ministry of Defence, the event emphasized cooperation and security in the IOR.
Theme: Training Cooperation for Maritime Security
The main theme for this year’s ‘MAHASAGAR’ interaction was “Training Cooperation to Mitigate Common Maritime Security Challenges in the Indian Ocean Region.” This theme underscores the importance of collaborative training efforts to address shared maritime threats and enhance security measures across the IOR.
What is MAHASAGAR?
MAHASAGAR—meaning “vast ocean” in Hindi—serves as the Indian Navy’s flagship initiative to promote high-level dialogue and cooperation among maritime leadership in the IOR. The acronym stands for Maritime Heads for Active Security And Growth for All in the Region. Launched in 2023, this bi-annual event has quickly gained recognition and support from participating nations, strengthening regional maritime collaboration.

During the third edition, key leaders discussed the significance of high-quality training and explored opportunities for increased training collaboration among IOR nations. The objective is to build capacity and develop skilled personnel capable of addressing shared maritime security challenges.
