Five-time Grand Slam singles champion Maria Sharapova and the legendary American twins Bob and Mike Bryan have been selected for induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame’s Class of 2025, as announced on Thursday. The induction ceremony will take place on August 23, 2025, at the Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, honoring these tennis icons for their outstanding contributions to the sport.
Maria Sharapova’s Historic Career
At 37, Sharapova made history in 2005 by becoming the first Russian woman to reach the world No. 1 ranking. Throughout her illustrious career, she secured victories at all four Grand Slam tournaments, placing her among only 10 women to achieve a career Grand Slam. Additionally, she earned a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Expressing her gratitude on social media, Sharapova stated, “Incredibly grateful to receive this honor… This recognition is a beautiful reminder of the deep appreciation I have for my fans. Each one of you made me reach for the stars.”
Despite her fierce competitiveness, Sharapova’s career faced challenges, including a 15-month suspension following a positive test for meldonium in 2016. Nonetheless, her impressive achievements, including nearly $40 million in prize money, have solidified her status as one of the most successful and recognizable athletes globally, culminating in her retirement in 2020.
Bryan Brothers: The Kings of Doubles
Bob and Mike Bryan are celebrated as the most successful doubles team in tennis history. The California duo, who played together throughout their professional careers, won an impressive 16 Grand Slam men’s doubles titles and held the world No. 1 ranking for an astonishing 438 weeks. The Bryans have also amassed a record 119 titles, including 39 ATP Masters 1000 titles and an Olympic gold medal in 2012.
Kim Clijsters, Hall of Fame President and former world No. 1, remarked, “Beyond their historic accomplishments on the court, the Class of 2025 has had a profound impact on the game of tennis, inspiring multiple generations of fans worldwide.”
