The Shilp Samagam Mela 2024 has officially kicked off at Dilli Haat, New Delhi, bringing together a colorful showcase of India’s traditional handicrafts. This vibrant event, organized by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, runs from November 5 to 15, 2024 and promises to be a grand celebration of art, culture, and economic empowerment.
A Grand Inauguration Ceremony
The Mela was inaugurated with great enthusiasm by Union Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar, alongside Minister of State B.L. Verma and other senior officials. Their presence at the event underlines the government’s strong commitment to supporting artisans and promoting India’s rich cultural heritage.
TULIP Programme: Empowering Artisans
A key moment during the inauguration was the launch of the TULIP programme—Traditional Artisans’ Upliftment Livelihood Programme. This initiative is designed to uplift artisans from Scheduled Castes (SC), Other Backward Classes (OBC), sanitation workers, and persons with disabilities. The program provides artisans with a global platform to sell their crafts and access new markets through digital technology.
Dr. Kumar highlighted the importance of digital empowerment, citing platforms like the PM-SURAKSHA Portal and PM-DAKSH Portal. These online resources offer access to subsidized loans and skill training, making it easier for marginalized groups to enhance their economic prospects.
Transforming Lives Through Financial Support
The Ministry has rolled out impactful financial support schemes, such as the Vishwas Yojana and Namaste Yojana, to provide economic stability to SC, OBC, and sanitation worker communities. The newly launched TULIP Digital Platform will function as an e-marketplace where artisans can directly connect with consumers, opening up opportunities for self-reliance and global recognition.
Remarkable Impact of Government Initiatives
According to Minister of State B.L. Verma, over 100,000 artisans have already benefited from various marketing opportunities provided by the Ministry. The Shilp Samagam Mela continues to be a pivotal platform for showcasing and promoting traditional crafts, and it promises to support even more artisans in the future.
Rang Paridhan Programme: A Tribute to Cultural Diversity
Another highlight of the event was the unveiling of the Rang Paridhan programme. This initiative features uniforms crafted from artisan-made products, reflecting the skills and cultural diversity of India’s traditional craftspeople. The Ministry’s corporations will adopt these uniforms, reinforcing a sense of pride in India’s rich artistic heritage.
Enriching Lives Through Skill Development and Loans
The Ministry’s efforts have had a far-reaching impact, with approximately 5.6 million individuals and their families benefiting from financial assistance. Furthermore, 614,000 young people have received skill development training, equipping them with the tools needed to achieve economic independence.
Explore Diverse Handicrafts from Across India
Visitors to the Shilp Samagam Mela 2024 can explore a wide variety of traditional crafts at 105 vibrant stalls. Artisans from 16 different states are showcasing their unique creations, which include metal crafts, wooden artifacts, cane and bamboo items, pottery, handloom goods, jewellery, leather products, and textiles.
