The International Cricket Council (ICC) has introduced Sumathi Dharmawardena P.C as the new Independent Chair of its Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU), effective November 1, 2024. Dharmawardena will succeed Sir Ronnie Flanagan, who leaves after a distinguished 14-year service.

Who is Sumathi Dharmawardena?

Dharmawardena brings a wealth of legal expertise and experience in combating corruption in sports. In his role as an Additional Solicitor General in Sri Lanka’s Attorney General’s Department, he represented the government, including the Ministry of Sport, in crucial legal matters. His career includes collaborations with global bodies such as Interpol and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime to combat sports-related corruption worldwide.

Contribution to Anti-Corruption Laws in Sports

Dharmawardena’s notable achievements include a key role in drafting Sri Lanka’s Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports Act, a significant step towards strengthening anti-corruption frameworks within the nation. This background positions him well to lead the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit.

ICC Chairman Greg Barclay’s Statement on the Appointment

ICC Chairman Greg Barclay praised Dharmawardena’s appointment, saying, “Sumathi’s distinguished career and commitment to integrity in sports will be invaluable to our mission of safeguarding cricket from corruption. We’re confident that his leadership will build upon the foundation laid by Sir Ronnie Flanagan, taking the ICC’s anti-corruption efforts to the next level.”

Dharmawardena’s Role and Responsibilities in the ICC ACU

As the new ACU Chair, Dharmawardena will lead the ICC’s anti-corruption initiatives by overseeing unit activities and strategic planning. He will work alongside the ACU’s General Manager – Integrity, who manages daily operations and implements anti-corruption initiatives globally.

By structuring his role with a strong commitment to integrity and robust legal knowledge, Sumathi Dharmawardena aims to further reinforce the ICC’s mission of maintaining cricket’s integrity and protecting it from corruption.
