Trinidad and Tobago recently became the eighth country and the first in the Caribbean to offer UPI (Unified Payments Interface) services to Indian travelers. This initiative allows Indian visitors to make direct payments in rupees using their mobile UPI apps. The announcement was made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the country.

What Is UPI and Its Significance?

UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is a rapid and secure digital payment system developed in India. It enables individuals to send or receive money using only a mobile phone and internet connection. With UPI now accessible in other nations, Indian tourists can avoid the hassle of carrying cash or forex cards while shopping or dining abroad. They can simply scan a QR code and make payments using their Indian bank accounts.

Where Else Can UPI Be Used Internationally?

Trinidad and Tobago joining the UPI network expands its reach to eight countries:

  • United Arab Emirates (UAE)
  • Singapore
  • France
  • Bhutan
  • Nepal
  • Sri Lanka
  • Mauritius
  • Trinidad and Tobago

How to Utilize UPI Services Abroad

  1. Install a UPI-enabled app (e.g., BHIM or PhonePe).
  2. Link your Indian bank account to the app.
  3. Enable international roaming on your mobile for OTPs.
  4. Ensure your bank and app support UPI Global.

While shopping, scan the UPI Global QR code, input the amount, and authenticate with your UPI PIN. The transaction is immediate and secure. Apps also offer features like setting spending limits or disabling global payments when not required.

Are There Any Transaction Fees?

According to NPCI, minimal conversion charges may apply for small foreign UPI transactions, which are lower than credit/debit card fees. This makes UPI a more cost-effective and convenient choice for Indian travelers.

NPCI has indicated that additional countries in Europe and the Caribbean might soon join the UPI network, providing Indian users with more global payment alternatives.
