UPSC ESE Eligibility Criteria : The eligibility criteria for the Union Public Service Commission’s (UPSC) Engineering Services Examination (ESE) are as follows:
I. Nationality:
A candidate must be one of the following:
- A citizen of India, or
- A subject of Nepal, or
- A subject of Bhutan, or
- A Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
- A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, or the East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Candidates under categories (2), (3), (4), and (5) must have a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.
II. Age Limit:
Candidates must be at least 21 years old and not older than 30 years as of January 1, 2025. This means candidates should have been born between January 2, 1995, and January 1, 2004.
Age Relaxation:
- SC/ST Candidates: 5 years
- OBC Candidates: 3 years
- Defense Personnel (disabled during hostilities): 3 years
- Ex-Servicemen and ECOs/SSCOs: 5 years
- Must have completed at least 5 years of service by January 1, 2025.
- Discharged due to completion of service, physical disability, or invalidation.
- ECOs/SSCOs (extended service beyond 5 years): 5 years
- Must hold a Ministry of Defence certificate stating eligibility for civil employment.
- Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD): Up to 10 years
- Including candidates with low vision, hearing impairment, locomotor disabilities, leprosy cured, dwarfism, acid attack victims, muscular dystrophy, specific learning disabilities, and mental illness.
III. Educational Qualifications:
Candidates must possess one of the following:
- A degree in Engineering from a university established by law in India, or
- Passed Sections A and B of the Institution of Engineers (India) exam, or
- An equivalent degree or diploma in Engineering from a recognized foreign institution, or
- Passed the Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India), or
- Passed Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India, or
- Passed the Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London (post-November 1959).
For Specialized Posts:
- Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engg.): M.Sc. degree or equivalent in Wireless Communication, Electronics, Radio Physics, or Radio Engineering.
- Indian Radio Regulatory Service (Group A): M.Sc. degree or equivalent in Wireless Communication, Electronics, Radio Physics, Radio Engineering, or Physics with special focus on Electronics or Telecommunication.
IV. Physical Standards:
Candidates must meet the physical fitness standards specified for admission to the Engineering Services Examination 2025.
